Dencon was awarded the surveying contract for the Glebe Island Bridge (renamed later to Anzac Bridge) in its first year of operation. The challenges were many but all met and answered. At any one time 4 survey teams were needed to provide survey to the east and west towers, the approaches and decks. Dencon provided innovative technique and design to meet demanding deadlines. Surveying instruments were interfaced with palmtop computers in the field to provide instantaneous results. This provided huge savings in time and resources. Dencon’s expertise in engineering surveying saw it included in the design and methodology of the bridge towers and deck. The project was completed ahead of schedule.

Dencon’s involvement with the Sydney Opera House included surveying the location of the foundation sea walls and positioning new pile locations under the forecourts and decks. This work had to be carried out in confined space with divers used to help locate the pile positions underwater. Accurate 3 dimensional surveys had to be carried out on the space occupied between the sea bed and existing structures to calculate volumes of mass concrete used to modify the Opera House foundations.

The second stage required Dencon to provide an accurate as built 3D model of the existing shells in order to design self elevating work platforms to restore the surface tiles. A reflectorless total station using pulse laser technology was used to survey thousands of points on the existing structure. This proved to be a significant cost saving to the client as only one point of access was required for each of the shells. Dencon’s surveyors enjoyed the privilege of the best views in Sydney.

Dencon was again proud to be associated with one of Sydney’s most memorable landmarks – Stadium Australia. Part of Dencon’s scope was to provide accurate 3D models of the as built concrete, cast-ins and bolts. This information was used to design the structural steel and façade elements. Total stations interfaced with palmtop computers were used to provide the accurate levels required for the track and arena. After completion of the stadium, Dencon was invited to join the team responsible for the measuring of the Olympic events. With the principal’s long standing involvement in Track and Field athletics, this was an opportunity not to be missed.
